Stromboli

1Stromboli is not difficult to make especially if you use this simple recipe. It is filled with ham, salami, and cheese that can be served as a meal or as appetizers. There are endless combinations such as adding crumbled bacon or making it all vegetarian.

Ingredients:

  • Ingredients:

  • 1 13.8oz pkg of refrigerated Pillsbury Pizza Crust
  • 1/8 lb deli ham, sliced thin
  • 1/8 lb deli hard salami, sliced thin
  • 1/8 lb sandwich pepperoni, sliced thin
  • 1/4 lb sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp dried basil
  • 1 cup marinara sauce (divide into 1/4 cup and 3/4 cup)
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. If using a dark pan, decrease temperature to 350 degrees.
  2. Lightly grease a 15" x 10" baking sheet. Be sure not to skip this step.
  3. Unroll pizza dough and lay onto baking or cookie sheet. Gently press dough into nearly the size of the baking sheet.
  4. Spread 1/4 cup marinara sauce on 3/4 of the dough lengthwise. (By leaving a few inches uncovered, it makes rolling much easier.)
  5. On top of the marinara sauce in the following order, layout the salami, pepperoni, ham, and lastly the cheeses. Sprinkle cheeses with oregano and basil.
  6. Starting at the long side of the dough that has been topped with all of the ingredients, roll up jelly roll style folding in the edges as you go. If you are not comfortable doing it this way, simply lay the ingredients in the middle into two overlapping rows. Then fold in each side lengthways folding in the short ends.
  7. Carefully invert and place seam side down.
  8. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat dough with beaten egg. Cut about 4 to 5 small slits in the top.
  9. Bake in 375 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve with remaining marinara sauce that has been warmed if desired.

Comments:

- Instead of the refrigerated pizza dough, you may also use a 1 lb frozen bread loaf that has been thawed and punched down according to package directions. Then press into a 15" x 10" pan or roll out into a 15" x 10" rectangle . Your supermarket may carry freshly made pizza dough that is also ideal for this recipe. Just keep the dough weight approximately between 13oz and 16oz.

Tips:

- The marinara sauce can be replaced with your favorite pasta sauce or pizza sauce. Our favorite marinara sauce is Barilla Marinara with Imported Olive Oil. It is the most fresh tasting marinara sauce we have ever had.

- Be sure ends are sealed so cheese doesn't escape.

Variations:

- Add sautéed vegetables such as onions, zucchini, and bell peppers. The raw vegetables don't have a enough time to soften while it is baking, therefore, I recommend them to be sautéed or blanched just until tender.

- Reduce the amount of deli meat and add cooked crumbled ground beef, sausage, or bacon.

- This also can be sliced thin and served as appetizers with marinara sauce as a side dipping sauce.
